Privacy Policy

App: Scanient: Ingredient Scanner · Effective date: 6 October 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how the Scanient: Ingredient Scanner mobile application ("the App", "we", "us") handles information when you use it. We built this app to work primarily on your device, and we have tried to keep the information we collect to the minimum needed to make the app work and to show ads that keep it free.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Camera

The App requests camera permission so you can scan the ingredients list printed on a food package. Camera images are processed entirely on your device using on-device text recognition (Google ML Kit). Photos you take within the App are not uploaded to us or to any server, are not stored by the App beyond the current scanning session, and are not shared with any third party.

1.2 Photos You Choose to Share

If you use the "Choose Photo" option, the App uses the Android system Photo Picker. This lets you select a single photo without granting the App broad access to your photo library. The selected photo is processed on-device the same way as a camera scan, and is not uploaded anywhere.

1.3 Manually Entered Text

If you type an ingredients list manually, that text stays on your device and is used only to look up ingredient information in the App's local database.

1.4 Ingredient Database

Ingredient and additive information is stored in a local database bundled with the App. Looking up an ingredient does not require an internet connection and does not send your scanned or typed text to any server.

1.5 Advertising Data

The App shows ads using Google AdMob. To serve and measure ads, Google's AdMob SDK may automatically collect certain information from your device, which can include:

This data is collected and processed by Google, not by us directly. We do not control what Google does with this data beyond what is described in Google's Privacy Policy and How Google uses data when you use our partners' sites or apps.

2. Information We Do Not Collect

The App does not require you to create an account, and we do not collect or store:

3. How We Use Information

The limited information described above is used only to:

We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for any purpose beyond operating the App.

4. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party service:

Ingredient and additive reference data used by the App is derived from Open Food Facts, used under the Open Database License. This data is bundled with the App and does not involve any transmission of your personal information to Open Food Facts.

5. Your Choices Around Advertising

6. Data Security

Because the App's core functionality (scanning and ingredient lookup) happens on your device and does not transmit your scans to us, there is no server-side database of your personal scans for us to secure or lose. Advertising data is handled under Google's own security practices as described in their privacy policy.

7. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details below so we can address it.

8. Your Rights (EEA, UK, and Switzerland — GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you may have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and similar laws, including the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data, and the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests (including for advertising). Because the App itself does not collect personal data beyond what is described above, most of these rights would be exercised directly with Google regarding AdMob's data processing. You can also contact us using the details below with any request.

9. Your Rights (California — CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA) gives you the right to know what personal information is collected about you, to request deletion of that information, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information (including for cross-context behavioral advertising). We do not sell your personal information. Advertising identifiers may be shared with Google/AdMob as described above, which may be considered "sharing" for advertising purposes under this law; you can limit this using the ad settings and controls described in Section 5. You can also contact us using the details below to make a request.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example if we add new features that change what data is collected. We will update the "Effective date" at the top of this page when changes are made. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
